Engorged breasts?
ths morning i woke up with really engorged breasts that were very painful. i was very chilly thru out the nite. but in the morning i woke up very hot and sweaty. with a lil fever. is it possible to get a fever with you being engorged?
It sounds like it could be mastitis. I looked up a website for you and posted three of the paragraphs here. I hope it helps!

"Mastitis is a breast inflammation usually caused by infection. It can happen to any woman, although mastitis is most common during the first 6 months of breast-feeding. It can leave a new mother feeling very tired and run-down. Add the illness to the demands of taking care of a newborn, and many women quit breast-feeding altogether. But you can continue to nurse your baby. In fact, breast-feeding usually helps to clear up infection, and nursing will not harm your baby.1

Mastitis usually starts as a painful area in one breast. It may be red or warm to the touch, or both. You may also have fever, chills, and body aches. If you have these symptoms, call your doctor today.

Signs that mastitis is getting worse include swollen, painful lymph nodes in the armpit next to the infected breast, a fast heart rate, and flu-like symptoms that get worse. Mastitis can lead to a breast abscess, which feels like a hard, painful lump. "
Does every mum experience engorged breasts after having a baby?
I have experienced 2 pregnancies now and even though I started breastfeeding immediately the babies were born, I still ended up with engorged breasts which are very painful indeed. It does not look like there is anything I can do apart from taking painkillers, expressing and getting the baby to suck which is not really helping. Any other suggestions would be welcome.
engorgement happens when your real milk comes in..before that colestrum or "first milk" is what you are mainly producing. It is very rich and provides the first boost of nutrition for your baby.

Once your regular milk comes in, engorgement happens but generally only last for a day or two....I found that taking warm showers helped greatly, and hot compresses between feedings also helped. Just make sure that you use nursing pads to catch the milk that will express on its own with the heat.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!!
3-month old breastfed baby sleeping through the night and engorged breasts?
My 3-month old is turning into a wonderful sleeper. She is sleeping 10+ hours straight a night.
Unfortunately, my breasts seem to be used to her former 3-4 hour
interval feeding schedule. As she is sleeping soundly, I am in major discomfort with engorged breasts. I let her sleep as long as I can, until I can't stand it any more. I am not really getting much sleep as I get so uncomfortable after just a few hours.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this?
Once you start to become very uncomfortable I would pump a little to help ease the pain. This may mean that you pump several times a night, but it will be short lived. Only pump a little because your body will regulate itself. What is not being used will not be made. Even if you manually express some of the milk it will help with your comfort level.
How to know for sure your breasts are engorged?
I just had my beautiful first born baby son on Tuesday. My breasts feel real heavy and they hurt/sore. Is this engorgement. He is still so small and doesn't eat much at one time but does eat every two hours. I have been pumping here and there and I asked a question on here before about how often you should pump and most ppl said to only do so if you're engorged. But, don't your breasts always hurt when breast feeding? Just wondering how to tell. I will be going back to work after Easter and do want a supply started.
It does sound like engorgement - they will usually also feel almost hard to the touch and may leak.

Engorgement occurs when your milk supply is adjusting (growth spurts), when you miss a few feedings and get overfull as a result, and especially when your milk supply is just coming in (as in your case). In a few days, you should expect that the milk will calm down a bit. Your breasts should still feel heavy, but not hard or sore.

When your baby is latched on correctly and engorgement subsides, breastfeeding shouldn't hurt at all. Some people suffer cracked or sore nipples (there is a cream available to help this), but many don't. The higher pressure of pumping can also create sore nipples the first couple of times. But besides the first few days of pumping and one case of a clogged duct, I haven't really suffered from sore breasts at all in 4 months of BFing.

With engorgement, you should only pump a little bit at a time to relieve pain or to make your breasts soft enough for baby to latch on, if he is having trouble. If you pump a lot of milk, your body will think you need that milk and maintain a bigger supply than your son drinks, therefore keeping you engorged.

When to pump depends on how much milk you are trying to get (just emergency supplies to freeze, one bottle a day, extra for when you return to work, etc). If you are planning on BFing after returning to work, then you will probably want to start your son on a bottle of breastmilk around 1 month (optimal time according to our dr) so he gets used to it. I like to have daddy give that bottle and pump during the missed feeding to get tomorrow's bottle (or if you want daddy to give the first night feeding (a great idea!), pump right before bed). I often don't get a whole bottle at this time since it is in the evening (low milk levels), so I also try to pump in the morning when I can (highest milk levels). It often works to let baby eat on one side in the morning and pump the other.

You can also pump at additional times during the day. These extra "feedings" will tend to increase milk supply. Its best if there is one hour between pumping and the previous/next feedings.

A lot of people have asked questions about storing/freezing milk, so if you need any of that info, it is here:

What do I do if I stoped breastfeeding and my breasts are engorged?
I just stoped breastfeeding my baby. I did that gradually, so both the baby and I would have a smooth transition. Last week I was breastfeeding every two days and now that I finally quit (This is the 3rd day without breastfeeding) my breasts are engorged and sore, especially inside the nipple area. Is that normal for the nipples to feel like there are little rocks underneath them? What can I do to help the engorgement and soreness? What's going to happen to this "left over" milk inside my breasts? HELP!
use hotpads and pressure to help your breasts stop making milk. You body will re-absorb the milk eventually, but it will hurt for awhile. Don't pump the milk out, it wil only encourage you to make more. If its really painful, express a little to take off the pressure, but not much. Call you dr, there are meds you can take to speed up the dry out. Good luck
Is it ok to ask my wife to use her engorged breasts for my pleasure after giving birth?
They're not going to be like that forever and a man has needs right? To titty f*ck them and for her to massage them in front of me.
You're an idiot.
How often do breasts get engorged?
I breastfeed my 2 and a half month old baby and my breasts would get engorged before more often and now they only get engorged when he sleeps through the night. Ive heard other women say they get engorged every 2 hours. So is my breast milk enough for my baby?
I would always wake up engorged with milk but never throughout the day time hours. If your baby seems satisfied and is on a reasonably regular schedule then you probably have enough milk. Your body adjusts to his needs. As for a regular schedule, it does not have to be every 4 hours as most babies get on-demand feeding. But he should be able to go 2 or 3 hours between feedings. Is he gaining weight OK? If he is, then he is probably fine.
Do women let their husbands go nuts with their engorged breasts after giving birth?
I mean, they still have sex right? Girls, would you just let your man play around with them and f*ck them for his pleasure? Or are they just for the baby?
All women are not the same!
Some enjoy breast play very much and even get pleasure from letting their husbands suckle their milk while others are grossed out and won't let their husbands touch them.
Side note: breast feeding produces the love hormone, oxytocin, the same as lovemaking so it seems breasts were designed to bring pleasure to both and they certainly improve health.
How do I know if my breasts is engorged?
I had a baby 6 days ago and I have been breast feeding her. My left nipple is now flat and I can't get it to harden so that she can latch on properly. She won't even latch on at all. It's kind of hard when I touch it but if I squeeze it milk does come out. What can I do so that my baby can latch on properly and get some milk from the breast on her own? It doesn't hurt but it is hard. Does this mean that it is engorged?
You'll feel it. Engorged breasts,at least from my own experience is pretty painful. I slept with frozen bags of peas on mine they hurt so bad.

You may have a clogged milk duct though. It will be one or two hard spots on your breast. If that is the case-you'll want to nurse or express if you can't get her to latch on. Also massaging the area and alternate applying a warm compress before nursing or expressing can help the milk start to flow right again.
How do you soothe engorged breasts?
I had my son on Friday and it is now Monday mornig, and i woke up with huge sore breasts. i am just wondering if there is anything i can do to soothe them that is not expensive, like a home remedy or something. thank you!!!
refrigerated cabbage leaves really do work!! you can crumple them up to soften them, then place them directly in your bra.

also nursing frequently will help in regulating how much milk you actually need for your baby and the excess will level out. if you're too full/hard for baby to latch on, you can either pump or hand express just enough to soften and get baby on to eat.
